I thought it was about time I update all of you on my Grave's disease as I have had questions that trickle in about it.
The day after Thanksgiving I took my radio-iodine capsule. I then spent the weekend at home alone because it wasn't safe for me to be around the boys. I felt fine, no issues other than my throat was a little tender. After about 2 weeks, I felt completely normal. I had no side effects at all. I went back to my Endocrinologist on 1/5. He was very happy with the results of my blood test. Before the radio-iodine capsule my thyroid levels were twice the normal limit. After just 6 weeks my levels were in the normal range. He said it "exceeded his expectations". Every person's body makes the adjustment differently. It CAN take anywhere from 2-12 months to get this result. I was lucky. He started me on Synthroid right away to help replace the hormone I would continue to lose if I wasn't on the medication. I was relieved because he was of the idea that we shouldn't wait until I became HYPO thyroid to deal with it. I like his approach because then I should not have to get to the point of being tired or gaining weight. I am taking a small dose for the first month and then go to 1 pill a day after that. I will go back to the Dr. at the end of March so he can see where my levels are at that time. I have had no ill effects of the medication and I'm even back to being cold again. I have been hot for so many months that this is a great change, so much more comfortable. I am even wearing a fleece sweatshirt today which I absolutely would not have worn 2 months ago.
